I am a true believer in the quote “I you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” If you actually want to achieve your goals, you have to have a plan to stay on track and keep you motivated. This year my focus has been on three things; having healthy hair, retaining more length, and easier manageability.
1. Healthy Hair
I consider myself a “relaxed natural,” meaning I’m not overly strict with the types of products I use in my hair and I use some level of heat on my hair pretty regularly (I use heat to dry my hair on wash day and I straighten my hair 2-3 times a year), but this year in order to achieve my goal I’m going to dial back on the heat. No more blow drying on hot or warm heat. Instead I will only dry my hair on the cool setting or allow my hair to air dry. To achieve healthier hair this year, I’m also going to steer clear of products with sulfates, parabens, and silicones as they can be too drying for natural hair and prevent the hair from receiving adequate moisture.
2. Length Retention
As I’ve mentioned in many of my previous posts, the key to growing long natural hair is retaining length and not so much about what products you use. And overuse of heat and constant manipulation of the hair strands will causes them to break often. So, even though your hair is always growing, you may not be retaining length because the ends, the oldest part of hair, are constantly breaking off. This year in order to retain length, I’m going to take better care of my ends. That means making sure they’re properly moisturized and sealed. I will add more protein to my regimen to restore any damaged cuticles and I will dust my ends often to reduce knots and tangles.
3. Easy Manageability
Last but not least, If I want to grow my hair longer, I’m going to have to opt for styles that keep my hair stretched and thereby reducing the amount of time spent on detangling and styling. The less you manipulate your curls, the more they can thrive. Stay tuned for future post on how I style my hair to keep them stretched.
